Abstract Artwork

The use of abstract artworks is a key piece found in modern decor.  With random and sometimes loud dollops of color, modern abstract art will add a punch of color, and visual focual point in the room.  Use along side a pair of curtains with a neutral color to enhance the effect of the focal point.

      
Calligraphy

Calligraphy involves smooth brush strokes of signs, letters, or symbols. Minimalist and oriental home interior decorators use calligraphy in decorative pillows or wall paintings to emphasize the simple and calm approach in the interior style. Asian and western variations of calligraphy are being recreated from a traditional art form to a contemporary design.

Geometric Designs

Shapes and two-dimensional figures are among the most commonly used patterns in curtains and pillow covers. Modern use of geometric prints involves the combination of bright colors and unique series of well-defined shapes. Ikat

Ikat refers to textiles with a distinctive dyed patterns. The traditional ikat is made from tie-dyed fiber threads which are then woven according to a specific pattern or figure. The tie-dyed texture of ikat explains the distinctive appearance, appeal, and arrangement of this type of design. In terms of interior design, modern homes integrate the ikat design in cushioned upholsteries, carpets, modern designer pillows, and even on curtains.

Kilim

Similar to the ikat, the kilim is also a woven textile which is of Persian origin. Kilims are normally used as rugs or carpets and are well-favored for their striking detail and combination of shapes and symbols. Apart from carpets, kilim designs are also incorporated in fabric curtains to create an “exotic” appeal in the living room.

Contemporary home interior styles are easy to achieve with the careful combination of unique patterns and the creative fusion of colors and prints. Evident to modern designs is the incorporation of bold prints and patterns in the most basic interior items such as pillows, curtains, rug, and even mantles. The use of these bold patterned fabrics may be new to some homemakers but these certainly appeal to a niche of lovers of unique designs.
